Bakelite is one of the earliest synthetic plastics, invented in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. It was developed as a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin; meaning once molded and cured, it retained its shape permanently and resisted heat, chemicals, and electrical conductivity. In the guitar world, Bakelite found early use primarily in the 1930s and 1940s. Leo Fender famously used it for pickup covers, control knobs, pickguards and switch tips. Eventually falling out of favor as more modern plastics like ABS, acrylic, and polystyrene became cheaper and easier to mold. However, it remains a sought-after material among vintage guitar collectors for its historical significance and unmistakable look and feel; dense, slightly brittle with a characteristic clack when tapped.
